The Problem

At the City of Coral Springs Charter School in Coral Springs, Florida. The Student Government Association under the leadership of President Steven Lerner, decided to host the first ever school wide leadership conference. This project was established in hopes to increase student involvement in co-curricular activities. Studies have shown that students who participate in after school activities will perform better in the classroom. Their conference has been established as a new tradition at Coral Springs Charter School.

Plan of Action

We had one month to plan the conference after receiving approval from our school administrators. We picked a day that is normally not used for academic work which was the day before winter break. We suspended all classes for that day. We created an individualized schedule for each student in high school (800) utilizing all high school classrooms. We trained 80 student counselors to lead workshops in the subject areas of Team Building/Goal Setting, School Unity, School Spirit, and Ethical Decision Making. Each workshop was comprised of discussions and interactive leadership activities/games that got students involved and excited to come to school that day. We invited a speaker named The Original Mike Smith from Difference Makers inc. to come in from California and speak to our students for the conference kick off and closing sessions. Mr. Smith is a very well known speaker across the nation and has spoke at some prior county leadership events. The overall day went so well that the school administrators felt that this should be an annual event that will become a tradition at our high school.
