The Problem

Our community is know for having one of the highest high school drop out rates. 26% of students every year drop out of school. We all know that in order to get any kind of job, we have to have at least a GED. We want to change this percentage in our community to more of a 0%. It may seem impossible, but I think that if we all work together, we can accomplish more than we think.

Plan of Action

For our plan of action we contacted the different elementary and middle schools, and asked the teachers to sign up students who were in need of some academic help for the End-Of-Grade testing. We signed up 30 students. Each member of Believers of Hope* had 2 children to help. Each child took home a permission slip to their parents, that way we would have permission from each students parents. The parents would also provide transportation from school. The school provides a little snack for them to eat. We meet at the school in the cafeteria. We have been meeting one day a week after school, for 2 hours a day. We interact with the students, and try to come up with ways to help them learn in their own unique way. For instance, I have been helping this 10 year old. She’s been having trouble with learning the formulas to math equations. I asked her about her favorite things to do. She replied with listen to music, and she also informed me that she can learn the words to a song after listening to it two times. So together, we come up with songs for each formula. Thankfully she remembered them and made a growth of 22 points on the End-Of-Grade testing, Passing with one of the highest scores in the class.
