The Problem
We live in a culture that consumes / discards. We value what is "new" over what is "old". Unfortunately, these values are not sustainable. We are running out of resources and filling landfills... meanwhile, huge populations live below the poverty line. We are not distributing resources intelligently, due in large part because we have stigmatized the idea of recycling. So my friends and I launched Score! Pop Up Swap to help change this perception. To swing the culture in a different direction. To make recycling fun, to make philanthropy sexy.
Plan of Action
Last year, I launched an event series with four friends called Score! Pop Up Swap. The concept is simple:
Attendees bring their once-cherished-though-no-longer-desired items to the event and drop them at the door. (It costs $3 to attend). Volunteers sort and distribute these items to themed “departments”, where professional curators organize these items into boutique-like displays. Past curators have included: Nylon Magazine, Flavorpill, Bust Magazine, The Desk Set etc. Attendees have the option to browse each department and take as much as they can carry. It is a high-energy event, with DJs, live silkscreening, food, drinks and fashion photographers taking photos of stylish “scored” outfits, etc.
At the end of the day, all leftover items and proceeds from the event are donated to charity.
Each Score! typically draws over 1,200 people. We've donated hundreds of dollars and over 4,000lbs of items (clothes, books, housewares, etc) to charity. But most importantly, we are helping to change the concept of recycling and philanthropy. You can give back to your community, divert from landfills, donate to charity AND have a great time.
We throw this event once every few months, and we hope to scale it to a national event series.
