The Problem

As a Dietetics student at California State University of Fresno, I wanted to help increase the awareness of Nutrition and health on campus and in effect help promote the importance of eating right and making healthy food choices in the Central Valley community. Having the background knowledge in Nutrition, I thought it was important host a Farmers Market on campus every week to help connect the Fresno State community with healthy snack options like fresh fruits and vegetables, calcium-rich and vitamin D fortified milk, healthy nuts and raisins and much more as healthier alternatives to eating on the run. I wanted to help create a place where students, faculty and staff came and learn about healthier eating habits, disease prevention, Diabetes, Obesity and malnutrition awareness, learning how to read a food label, checking their BMI status, learning the difference between good fat vs. bad fat, organic farming and sustainable agriculture, accessing the Food Pyramid and so much more to help our community be a healthier place! I am passionate about Nutrition, helping others, and feel it is important for people to share their knowledge, reach out to others in need and set a good example of what it is like to try and help solve issues at hand in the most creative, fun and empowering way possible.

Plan of Action

To continue to provide a healthy Farmers Market on campus every week to students, faculty and staff in order to help educate about nutrition and enrich the lives of many people in the community. Because of the Farmers Market's success and popularity, a number of other CSU Campuses have followed in our footsteps and hosted their own Farmers Market event in reflection of our efforts. There have been many guest speakers, taste testing events, cooking demonstrations as well as teaching how to shop smart at your local grocery store. This event has provided a number of people the opportunity to ask nutritional questions about their own lives and families, and in return have been given evidenced-based, friendly support to help lead them into the right direction of a healthy life. This event has collaborated with a number of departments on campus to outside organizations wanting to get more involved. It has been a collection of passion, leadership and dedication to help increase the awareness of nutrition to all ages and help eliminate the misunderstanding of nutrition and gain a clear and better understanding for the future.
