The Problem

I was down in Drake Bay in Costa Rica which is a very poor community. I was joining a project that was focusing on environmental conservation and education in the area and more specifically working to increase the population of sea turtles in the area which has been decimated by poachers and the influx of non-sustainable tourism in the area.

Plan of Action

The impact this organization has made is huge. First, we've saved the lives of thousands of sea turtles that would have otherwise died due to poaching or the influx of new hotels in the area which changes the environment. Secondly, we've involved the community at every step of the way. Local Costa Ricans come and patrol the beaches with us and help us educate the local community. We held a Turtle Festival in which we invited the local townspeople (over 300 showed up) and educated them about the importance of these issues. Eventually this project will be 100% turned over to the local community.
