The Problem
Just last semester, six college students traveled deep into the heart of Ghana to a village called Senase. During our time there, we experienced the overwhelming emotional connection we had with the people living in Ghana and felt more at home than anywhere else we had ever been. Then we traveled to a school, the Akatim Village School, in another village less than fifteen minutes down the road. Although the travel time was minimal, the difference between the lives of the children living in the village and those in Akatim were almost unbelievable. Unlike the vibrant, happy and lively children in Senase, the children in Akatim had been drained of hope and were living their lives more as ghosts than as children. These children were at a school that had been abandoned by the government and these children had been forgotten. At that moment, we knew that we could not leave these children...we could not let them be forgotten. We started a non-profit organization called The Senase Project with a simple mission, to eradicate poverty through community development. We are hoping to give these children a school that is a conducive educational environment that will in turn give them the opportunity to continue their education and create hope for themselves and future generations of students in their position.
Plan of Action
We started as six students who met a man on Facebook and traveled into his home village seven hours into the heart of Ghana and have since grown into a non-profit organization. We have spent countless hours drafting constitutions, sketching out school plans, developing fundraising ideas and centralizing our efforts to make the greatest impact. We are currently in the process of becoming 501(c)3 certified and are on our way toward making a difference. We have already completed one supply drop to the students since our visit to Ghana that included school supplies, toys and pictures. Next semester we will also be launching our University and High School Chapter program where students can get involved on the grass roots level and learn how to make a difference in the life of another.
