Volunteers can visit local nursing homes and interact with the senior citizens. I have found from working with elderly people that they are often bored and lonely. Young, lively volunteers can bring cheer to these people with the holidays and on weekends with activities like card making, gift wrapping, baking, arts and crafts, or scrapbooking.
