The Problem
Last year I was the Senior Editor of the Balboa High School yearbook in San Francisco, California. I worked with the contracted brand-name portrait company, an out-of-state company that has a monopoly over the market of professional high school graduation portraits. They charge an exorbitant fee to the students and don't offer nearly the level of customer service that, in my opinion, they should. I was concerned about the relationship I saw
between the photography business and the students. Now as a college freshman at San Francisco State University, I seek to help high school graduates by giving them another option as far as formal portraits. I am teaching a photography class at Balboa High School and I am still involved in the yearbook club, volunteering as as an adviser/coordinator.
Plan of Action
My idea is to provide reasonably-priced Senior Portraits to my old high school's graduating class of 2011. Knowing that I was also the school's top photographer, more than a handful of students requested a way to get senior portraits for less money. By popular demand, I agreed to do senior portraits at a fraction of the price so that they won't have to go through the same scenario that I went through as a senior. This year I am a freshman at San
Francisco State University, and I am still volunteering with the yearbook club at Balboa High School, not as the editor, but as a teacher. I teach photography and graphic design as well as help organize the club itself. I can imagine my portrait business expanding to more than one high school, because I believe that the students will recognize that young eyes and a fresh angle are very important in capturing someone's senior year--rather than deciding to pay upwards of $270 to get the same quality results without the same kind of customer service.
With grant money I can have the professional equipment while also being able to offer the services to low income students. For example, I had one person ask me yesterday if I could take her portrait for free. This person was kicked out of their household, had to switch schools, and had no money whatsoever. I promised to take their senior
portraits at no cost, and I want to do the same for others in similar situations.
I have already gained notoriety among the seniors. My plan is to advertise the business to seniors who don't have the money to get prints from the major company. I have talked to the administration of the high school who say that it's a great idea. I plan to purchase more equipment for the business so that I can truly provide better quality results than the leading company.
Then next year I will do it again, and reach out to more high schools in the Bay Area. I plan to break the wall between the photographer and the student.
