The Problem

Homestead, Florida is a predominantly low-income city in South Florida. Over 90% of the schools are Title 1 and in need of improvement (SINI) under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 (NCLB). While NCLB does help these students, not all of them are chosen to be part of the Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program that offers at least 25 hours of free tutoring. I would like to offer low-cost tutoring to these students that will help them excel in school.

Plan of Action

I plan to market the low-cost tutoring at local community centers, libraries, and door-to-door. The tutoring would be $5/hr and would consist of either Reading, Math, or Science. Sharpen Your Pencil Tutoring would use research-based curriculum to ensure that the student will be able to complete all work with 80% accuracy. If they are not at grade-level, the goal would be to help them get up to grade-level before the school year is over.
