Shawnee DoSomething: Animal Welfare Club Pet Fair and Adopt-a-Thon 2009

the problem:

Burlington County, New Jersey has hundreds of homeless dogs and cats going into shelters every day. Just locally, we have several Animal Shelters, Private and Public Shelters, such as the Animal Welfare Association (Voorhees), The Animal Orphanage (Voorhees), Burlington County Animal Shelter, Burlington County Cat Initiative, Animal Sanctuary, and many many more.

vital stats:

people impacted:

100

people involved:

35

why it's important:

The DoSomething: Animal Welfare Club of Shawnee High School is completely dedicated to the welfare of the innocent pets in the animal shelters. We not only volunteer at the shelters trying to get the poor animals adopted, but we held a Winter towel and blanket drive to keep them warm, and will be holding a dog/ cat food drive so they can eat in the Spring and Summer when the shelter's income of food is low. Are club loves animals, and are trying everything we can to give them the best life possible in the shelters.

the plan of action:

Our club has been working hard since December to plan this Adopt-a-Thon. With the initial idea of the event from our pet-loving Assistant Principal, we have gotten many ideas that we are following through with. We have many fun events planned such as an Obstacle Course, a Best Kisser Contest, a Smartest Dog Contest, a Puppy Portraits station, and much more animal friendly activities.

how you can get involved:

All of these fun activities require some sort of funding. So the best thing, right now, that we can get from the community is donations for the event. We are in desperate need for some major funding and we believe that with the help of the community and DoSomething.org we can accomplish our goals. To Donate, please send a check made payable to Shawnee High School, and in the Memo, please put: Animal Welfare Club Acct #106. You can male this to 600 Tabernacle Road, Medford, NJ 08055.

Thank you so much for your continuing help and we hope to receive your donations soon.

This is a great thing you guys are doing! Thanks for getting people to care!

Thank You! Come out and join us if you are able to!

I will definitely try to! It sounds like a great event! I'm sure I just missed it on the page or something, but what is the date? Also, my mom works in Cherry Hill, doing little kids' music classes and birthday parties. If you'd like, I can see if she would be available to do something at the Adopt-a-thon! She could also tell her 100+ families about it. (Once they find out she'll be somewhere, they tend to follow her, bringing a lot of people to the fair...) Let me know! (No promises though! She does a lot of parties of weekends, but you never know!)

I meant to mention this in my last comment. Her website is www.singmarcia.com or www.kidsmusicround.com

Please note of the change of date- its April 25th now. Thanks!

I don't really think that there will be something for her to do (because of her profession) BUT if you could ask her to please tell her friends and families about the event- that would be perfect!!!
you can find more info at http://lrhsd.org/shawnee/cwp/view.asp?A=3&Q=334141

Thanks again! (and please note the change of date to April 25th)

This is an awesome project! Have you looked into Do Something's new ASPCA Animal Action grants? It's for young leaders like you who are promoting animal welfare and action ideas to help animals. The deadline is April 30th--check it out at http://www.dosomething.org/grants/aspca

Good luck!
