The Problem

Both a lack of opportunities within Minneapolis Public Schools for students to express their creativity and hone their creative skills as well as a lack of understanding in the community of the incredible asset that students in Minneapolis schools are.

Plan of Action

We have a Youth Editorial Board made up of 10 students from of the public high school in the district. These students make all of the decisions about the paper itself, while the staff help with communication between funders and organizations and with the budget. The paper comes out twice a year, and each issue highlights a topic that the Youth Board feels is important for their peers to know about discuss. The Youth Editorial Board takes submissions from students in the schools, from organizations who serve Minneapolis youth, and they also generate and write their own stories. They also showcase student art and poetry. When completed, the issue is a powerful and diverse tool that features articles that educate youth on the issue, share perspectives on personal experiences, and propose solutions. Copies of the paper are then distributed throughout the district and city to youth, teachers, and staff. Currently the Youth Board is strengthening ties to day school teachers to encourage them to utilize the paper as a teaching and learning tool for their students.
