The Problem
Because there is such a lack of communication between them, we are trying to break down the barriers between high school students and special needs students by matching them up based on similar interests and then going on buddy outings to form friendships.
Plan of Action
I created my project a little over a year ago by working with Youth Venture Seattle and receiving a $1,000 grant. I got SIFF Club approved at Redmond High School and advertised for members and participants to join. I worked extensively getting applications approved within the district and coordinated events and outings with the club. I feel like the impact made is huge. I think some of the high school students have ben able to come out of their comfort zones and befriend someone they may normally look past; parents have the joy of seeing their child interact with their peers; and the participants get a chance to be social outside of school with their peers and feel accepted.
