The Problem
We as a country spend a lot of time telling our youth that they aren't old enough to make a difference, and we disagree! We know that there is no age limit to changing the world, and we know that individuals are more willing to step up to make a difference if they feel connected to their peers around the world. Simply Equal Education is working to help youth in the United States understand their role as active agents of social change by helping to create peer relationships around the globe.
Plan of Action
Simply Equal Education's first program, The Paper Flower Project offers presentations to schools and other groups on what it would be like to grow up and go to school in Equatorial Guinea (EG), West Africa. Part of these presentations is a classroom workshop where the students create their own social justice initiatives, whether it is a fundraiser, locker cleanout, or school supply drive. The supplies collected are then sent to schools in EG; we've currently sent over 1 ton of supplies to 2 schools. Simply Equal Education's newest program, SEE Your World, is a service learning exchange program geared towards youth ages 13-university level which will help young people form connections with their global peers and make a lasting change by partnering students to participate in service learning projects in both communities.
