The Problem
We are trying to be prepared for a natural or terrorist disaster by obtaining skilled volunteer information ahead of time for our Volunteer Reception Center so that we can call upon those skilled volunteers in our time of need. So far we have only had youth (high school students) working on this project, but we would like to increase our Volunteer base and include all ages and demographic. We live in a border town, Canada is just across the bridge. The U.S. Coast Guard will be doing a mock disaster in Summer 2011 and has asked us to be the HUB of the spontaneous volunteers, managing them, as well as getting skilled volunteers to assist. There will be a variety of mock issues such as an oil spill, people that are hurt, possibly a fire and more.
Plan of Action
First we need to go through our volunteer applications for the last year (at a min.) and get those Vs to fill out our NEW skilled Volunteer form ie what special skills do you possess, what is your day job, what licenses do you have and more. Then we also want to solicit skilled volunteers from our Tri-County area. Next we want to offer training and do a mock disaster in Summer 2011.
