The Problem

As of now, carbon emissions are being caused all over the world which is causing tons of environmental changes. We, Smart Energy Club members, want to help prevent this problem. According to the EPA, on average, 30% of energy used in US buildings is unnecessary. Smart Power CVHS is a project that will target unnecessary energy that is used at the school so that the facilities manager has the power to turn off the power and save the school money as well as reducing carbon emissions.

Plan of Action

The key components of Smart Power CVHS are to install sub-meters in every building on the Castro Valley High School campus, install the Green Manager software which will analyze the school’s energy usage into a format that anyone can comprehend, and, with the help of our school wide community, implement smart energy conservation efforts. Sub-meters along with the Green Manager tracking software can display energy usage in any building, at any particular moment, in tracking cost, kilowatt hours and carbon tons, starting from the day of smart meter installation. This real-time information will be available online to the public through the CVHS website, while the district facilities manager will have access to the same information in more detailed form. According to the EPA, on average, 30% of energy used in US buildings is unnecessary. Our proposed installation of five sub-meters with Green Manager software will help us track anomalies (abnormal energy spikes) in energy usage in a particular building at a particular time. This will allow the facilities director to investigate and resolve the underlying energy problem - thus reducing the school's energy consumption and saving money.
