The Problem

Smart Project An unrecorded incidence of December 24th, 2006 where a group of excited and inebriated youths gang raped a drunken HIV positive mother in a coastal town in Kenya haunts. Are you disturbed when you spot under-age girls in the streets at night and in night clubs; when you hear school boys gang rape prostitutes or call-girls in their dormitories; when you see under-age beach-boys and homosexuals or when you see an impregnated school girl, or any school drop-out loitering? Where are mentors? Is it that our children are spoilt beyond repair or we “left everything” to teachers in our under-staffed schools? Is it that parents have relaxed or is it a new culture or style? If we were mentored during our yon years, why are our children ostracized? Can we just sit and watch our children perish? Do you think and feel something is wrong in our children' lifestyles; something needs to be done and something can be done or you can do something? If yes, you are part of Youths in Action. What is Smart Project? Empowering a child is empowering a nation. Many school children have landed into forced marriages, impregnation, prostitution, drugs abuse, homosexuality, drop-out for menial jobs or lack of interest in education. This project target girls and boys in primary and high schools to sensitize them on behaviour and attitude change towards education, health and development so as to be change agents in the community.

Plan of Action

How We Achieve the Goal? The project employs humanistic and behavioural theories. Humanistic theory assumes that human beings have tendency to survive, develop, differentiate and grow (process called self-actualization). All people experience some kind of incongruence between the self and personal experiences but unconditional positive regard and empathy demonstrated by a mentor can make a difference. Behavioural theory is based on premises of reinforcement of safe behaviours, personality development and maintenance of personality. Through learning, formation of acceptable behaviours, attitudes, personality and habits; an enabling environment and positive reinforcement, behaviour change is achievable. Youths in Action employs both approaches towards behaviour change and maintenance of new behaviour through modelling or mentorship. The project utilizes mentors to sensitize students on behaviour change. Behaviour change is not incidental. It involves steps from being aware, concerned, acceptance, challenged, motivated to change, change and sustenance of change. The project sensitizes the target population on various health issues, facilitates decision making, makes follow-ups on success of the interventions and ensures sustainability of the project. Though the project is biased to the girl-child, every elected student will get knowledgeable to empower the child to differentiate a bad or good tough, secret and behaviour. The main sessions include topics on sexuality, attitude change, educational value, behaviour change, self-assertiveness, and life skills among others. Trainees engage in discussions, attend symposiums and role-play.
