The Problem
Sneakers going into landfills is a world problem. Many of the sneakers can be cleaned and then sent to third world countries to be reused. The other non-reusable sneakers can be chipped, recycled and made into new products. Both of these actions reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfills, where they may never decompose.
Plan of Action
I belong to a group called the YES! (Youth Engery Summit) Team at my high school. We initiate projects that reduce energy usage and help the environment. Collecting used sneakers will help our contribution to reducing wastes that typically end up in the landfill.
1. Our first step is to receive funding to purchase collection bins.
2. The collection bins would be ordered to house the tennis shoes.
3. Publicizing the sneaker collection information through the use of posters and school website would happen next.
4. While working on publicizing, the collection bins would be placed in accessible locations.
5. Collection of used sneakers would then take place.
6. When the bins are nearly full, sneakers would be weighed for records.
7. After the sneakers have been weighed, greensneakers.org will be contacted in order for us to donate the sneakers.
