The Problem
The problem attempting to be solved is the lack of educational and economic mobility and power within the Black community of the United States.
Plan of Action
When I first started attempting to solve this issue, I developed a newsletter which was distributed in local barbershops on North-side and East-side of Wilmington, DE. My next step came when I was able to use the basement of a church to host community meetings to address the needs of children living in the area.
If awarded the scholarship, the funds will be used to help revamp a breakfast program for school children. Inner city Black youth have the highest probably for drop out rates - an astounding 52%!
This increasingly large inner city Black youth drop out rate is primarily due to external influences such as: a lack of food-causing hunger and an inability to focus, or embarrassment in their clothing. In fact, reading Dr. Ann Arnett Ferguson in her book, "Bad Boys," the primary reason why inner city Black youth go to school is for the lunch.
I believe a "FREE Breakfast For School Children Program" is needed to assist with an academic process.
(other uses include)
* Developing an Independent "Off the Streets" after school program
* Developing a research and debate panel to address social reform in Black communities.
