The Problem

While SOS Outreach operates various programs, the core intent of all programs is to engage youth in outdoor experiences while teaching a core value curriculum. Programs in Jupiter, Florida do this by providing youth kayaking and stand up paddle boarding experiences that integrates youth development curriculum and positive adult mentors. Through these opportunities, students gain exposure to the outdoors, learn new and exciting activities, and gain tools necessary for positive development. Students are selected to participate in these programs by a student reference letter either from a youth agency coordinator or a teacher in school who single out students with at-risk behavior that could benefit from the programming. Within the program groups of five participants each, who are divided by skill level, are matched with one of our adult mentors in order to foster a positive adult interaction between our participants and volunteers. Each volunteer goes through a screening process in order to participate with our youth; our mentors, especially with the paddle core program, keep the same group throughout the program as we believe consistency is key.

Plan of Action

The plan of action requires recruiting local youth agencies who work with at-risk youth and develop a partnership to provide the supplemental programming for the youth. Also, work on developing additional locations for programs to occur while looking for funding opportunities to enable the growth of equipment. In establishing this office, we've already worked with a group of 15 kids from Take Stock in Children and only see the program to continue growing.
