The Problem

Together we are trying to eliminate local hunger with both the food drive and donating the left over chili and soup to a local soup kitchen. In addition, we are trying to help Habitat for Humanity in building homes for people in need. In 2010 the left over food went to a soup kitchen in Wantagh. We were told that the amount of left overs alone would feel 60-80 people a day for up to a week! Plus we worked twice on Habitat for Humanity sites on Long Island- each time we were allowed to bring approx. 20 people! In 2009 we donated our leftovers and sent 25 students to Shirley, NY for a Habitat for Humanity build!

Plan of Action

We started preparation with picking a date and time. Then worked on advertisements and what we wanted. The school had no problem letting us use the cafeteria on weekend, and because the previous week was midterms, we were able to start decorating the cafeteria up to three days before. Some of us called businesses we knew well to ask for donations. McDonalds donated silverware while Outback and Applebees donated either food or giftcards! Among were the Yankees, Mets, Giants, and Jets, who donated anything from tickets, to signed helmets, to signed posters, and bobble heads! Among others! Plus we made it into a contest! We offered recognition of the winners through trophies-one for best soup, best chili, and over all most popular! That way the food is free and there is some fun competition to keep the day excited! and remember all leftovers can go a local soup kitchen!
