The Problem
Native species, both plant and animal, are in decline all over the world. Meanwhile people are locked into lifestyles devoid of direct connection to the natural world. What if it were possible to use some of the creative drive and adventurous spirit which the entertainment industry is built on to re-connect mass quantities of humans to the natural world in a way that helps stop bio-diversity loss?
Plan of Action
My plan of action is to create an online collection of songs that people can download for free or for any amount they feel inspired to donate. The website will offer a packet of wildflower seeds to those who donate $5 and over. The flower packet will be sent through the mail accompanied by instructions on how to successfully plant the seeds and why wildflowers are an important source of food to native pollinator species which are a crucial link in maintaining the health of our ecological systems.
The songs featured on the website will be rotated on a seasonal basis to keep interests fresh, at least four times per year, and will reflect moods in relative accordance with Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring.
The website, www.southisup.org is not yet published; however, I do own the domain. The site design is nearing completion, and the first batch of 'South Is Up' songs have been chosen.
'South Is Up' is the name I chose because from a bigger scale of perspective, if one were to look at our Earth and galaxy from a random point in outer-space, there would be no obvious definition of 'up' except, possibly 'away from the strongest center of gravity'. Thus, 'South Is Up' is about reorienting our perspectives, for the purpose of seeing a bigger vision, a longer timeframe, and a path to human sustainability on the Earth.
We can re-orient our daily lives toward growing sustainability and relationship with the Earth's support systems--starting with flowers. Growing more wildflowers gives native pollinators in each bio-region necessary nectars so they can survive, thrive, and carry out the specialty work of pollinating the the plants in their locales. Human beings can have a more positive, stewardship role in the world and encourage bio-diversity simply by planting more flowers, especially native varieties. The flower has been a living symbol of transcendent beauty since time immemorial, and within its fine delicacy awaits wondrous opportunity for a world transformed. 'South Is Up' is about transforming our world and re-orienting our vision so that 'South' can be seen as 'up' and what the world needs most can be made possible.
