The Problem

We are working on addressing the problem of obesity in South Santa Rosa. This area has very high rates of obesity among children and adults. We are also interested in reducing gang violence that keeps people from feeling safe in their own neighborhood. The South Park Summer Day and Night Festival promotes healthy eating and active living among the people who live in the area. We also have a big focus on neighborhood and community safety.

Plan of Action

I am a member of a youth leadership group called DIG Leaders. Our group focuses on community issues and we seek to find solutions to problems. DIG Leaders has been around since 2000 when if was founded to prevent underage drinking. Over the years our mission and goals have changed to include other community issues including the promotion of healthy eating and active living, to reduce obesity rates, gang prevention and neighborhood improvement projects. Our focus with the day and night festival is promoting health living, active living and neighborhood safety. The festival is a celebration of health and community. The festival will start at 2:00 PM and end at 11:30 PM. During the day there will be entertainment, food, a health fair, healthy food samples, children and teen activities, sports, and will end with a movie in the park.
