The Problem

Maiwut County in South Sudan was the headquarters for Dr. Riek Machar during the 25 year civil war. Maiwut has been devastated and is left with very little infrastructure. The village is struggling to rebuild itself, but it is difficult with little to no economy, and frustrated by malaria and other health epidemics. The Government of South Sudan (GOSS) has provided a clinic for the community, but does not consistently provide medicine and supplies. The clinic has no lab and very few diagnostic tools. People in Maiwut, especially children die all the time from illnesses that are very simple to treat.

Plan of Action

Rachel and I are now working to start a non-profit organization so that we can more effectively raise funds. We plan to return to Maiwut yearly and indefinitely to help the community rebuild itself after 25 years of civil war. We have told the governor in the area of our plans and have his full support. He even allowed us to stay in his hut while we were there. The vice-president of S. Sudan, Dr. Riek Machar has indicated that he would like to meet us in Maiwut on the 15th of Dec. 2009 to discuss this project.
