Special Olympics 2009

the problem:

I am trying to help people that have mental or physical disabilities. I help them realize that they can do things just like anyone else. I teach them how to play softball, how to swim, and play soccer. It helps people cope with their disabilities.

vital stats:

people impacted:

14

people involved:

why it's important:

I volunteer for the Arizona Special Olympics Program. We have teams made up of people with physical and mental disabilities. We teach them how to play different sports such as, softball, swimming, and soccer. Playing these sports and being apart of a team helps them cope with their disabilities. It gets them involved and helps them make friends.

the plan of action:

In the fall I put together a softball team. To do so I had the organization sponsor and assist me. I asked all the people I knew from the program already to join and also went to some of the Worlds classes (special ed.) and asked them if they would like to be apart of this. Overall my team had 14 participants.

how you can get involved:

Other kids can help by finding their local Special Olympics branch and volunteer.
