The Problem

I want to encourage awareness, at my school, about people with intellectual disabilities and specifically about Special Olympics Vermont. My goal is to raise awareness about volunteer opportunities with Special Olympics Vermont and to “Spread the word to end the word” at my school.

Plan of Action

I am planning a Special Olympics Vermont awareness event at my school. I am planning to set up a table during lunch time. Special Olympics has a program called “Spread the Word to End the word” that encourages people to not use the word ‘retard’. I plan to buy stickers, bracelets, and shirts from their web site http://www.r-wordstore.com/. At the table I plan four things. The first is to hand out stickers and bracelets and to tell people about the spread the word to end the word campaign. Second is to have a ‘Spread the word to end the word’ bag and fill it with prizes donated by local businesses and raffle it off. Third is to have a list of opportunities for kids to volunteer for Special Olympics Vermont. Last is to buy new competition bibs for the winter athletes at SOVT, display them at the table, have the kids in my school write in a card to the athletes, then donate the bibs and send the card to the SOVT athletes on behalf of my school. I hope the athletes write back and I can put the letter in my school newsletter.
