The Problem

The problem that my project "Sports for a Cure" was attempting to solve is the need for more information to be available to young girls about breast health. If we can make this information available to young girls it can become part of their normal health routine eventually saving lives.

Plan of Action

I decided to use a program that is successful at the collegiate level - "pink" sporting events and adapt it for use at middle, high and recreational sporting events. Kids who are involved in sports typically are interested in good health and breast health should be part of the equation. "Sports for a Cure" was born from this idea. I partnered with the local Susan G Komen chapter for the education portion of the project. Once the project was up and running I saw just how far reaching it could be, so I help draft legislation which passed! I also partnered with the WVSSAC and the State High School basketball tournament was pink this past March. Several thousand people were exposed to the life saving information. WV Susan G Komen has adopted by project and have continued to spread the message!
