The Problem

It has become so common to use the words Retard and Retarded in an everyday conversation- not knowing who is listening and who it is effecting. Raising awareness of these words and intellectual and physical disabilities is a huge effort but is still accomplishable.

Plan of Action

I talked to the principal of my school and told her what our "problem" was and my plan of action. She was completely behind anything I choose to do, so it was good that I started there. I went out and purchased the paper and paint needed to do our "pledge poster". At lunch during the Wed, Thurs and Friday before our winter break I had youtube clips playing in the cafeteria and the poster on tables with five different colors of paint in tins. If a student wanted to participate and take the pledge, they would simply put their hand in whatever color of paint they choose; then they would place their hand print on the poster- taking the pledge to make a conscience effort to not use the words Retard and Retarded and help others also use descretion.
