The Problem

kids, parents, teachers, celebrities etc. use the word retarded in everyday speech without even thinking about the effect that it has on those with special needs, their friends and family.People show a lack of respect and sensitivity by using the word retarded. Using the word retarded, is just as bad as any other racial slur. When somebody uses the word retarded carelessly, they are verbally putting down those with special needs and it is unfair.

Plan of Action

Since I was a freshman our club Best Buddies would have a day dedicated to spread awareness to other students about the hurtful effects of the word retarded. We created a banner that said " I pledge to stop using the R-word" and had pieces of paper which said "disable the label" and had students, teachers and faculty sign there name and hang it up on the banner. We also created shirts that said, disable the label, ban the R word. As well as signing their name, we made blue ribbons for those who pledged to wear around the school for the day. We also baked cookies and decorated them with a R and a x over it. As well as a day dedicated to spread awareness about the word retarded, a group of girls and I went to numerous classrooms and educated them about people with special needs and what contributing members of society they are, and how they are just like everybody else and likes to do what everybody else likes to do.
