We are students at Sammamish High School. We were recently inspired by recycling week at our school to start thinking of alternative ways to promote recycling. We are involved in Environmental Warriors, and every Monday we collect bottles, cans and paper from the recycling bins around school and ensure that they go into the proper recycling disposal. However, I have designed a more efficient way to recycle and inspire the community at the same time by creating a new recycling bin.
The Idea We Have
Components:
1.large wheeled carts for the custodians, one for recycling and one for waste
2.Trio color coded compartment recycling bin (Waste, Paper, Plastic/Cans)
3.Multiple languages for signs/instructions
4.Organized, simple instructions written on the bin
5.Decorate with National Art Honor Society to foster Sammamish Spirit and raise Sammamish Pride
6.* Mini recycling bins near teacher desks
The bin costs $39.00 .
What we hope to accomplish
Although our school has improved its recycling habits after the work that Environmental Warriors has done, we are not sure that everyone understands what to recycle or the benefits it brings to our community. We have noticed students have become more inspired to continue recycling after they see our club clean up our school. However, we are seeing that a lot of non recyclable items such as caps, wrappers and garbage end up in the recycle bin and many bottles are still put in the trash. This project would help remind people to recycle items correctly. Also, by having multiple languages, more people who might have not understood the rules of recycling, will be able to participate and help our school and community. If this project is successful, we will notice that bottles are in the recycling bin, caps in the trash, and that less (hopefully none) of the non-recyclable items end up in the recycling section. This project also strives to make the life of our custodians easier because this way they will not have to carry big recycling bins and it will only take an extra step out of their daily routines. Also, by having plain white garbage/recycle bins, National Art Honor Society could help design the bins therefore incorporating Sammamish Spirit and Pride into our Totem bins.
