The Problem

So many mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters are away from their families during the Christmas holidays because they are fighting in the Iraq war. Also, many soldiers do not get any letters or holiday cheer because they just don't have any family. My goal for this project was to share some love to our soldiers at war and let them know that there are people thinking about them over the holidays. This is an on-going project that starts up every November and ends every December.

Plan of Action

1. I had to get approval from the school superintendent in order to start my project which was to have all the Powhatan County schools make Christmas cards for the Powhatan soldiers at war. 2. She approved it and liked it so much, she sent an email to all the principals telling them about it, who then sent that email to all of their teachers. 3. I decorated signs, posters, and the collecting bags. 4. I then went around to all of the five Powhatan County schools and spoke to the Principal at each one about where I could hang the posters and the collection bags. 5. I waited for a few weeks, and then picked up all the bags from the schools. They were heavy! 6. My mom, dad and I read every single card because we had to make sure there weren't any ofensive words or phrases. 7. Then we counted all the cards and the first year, I raised over 1,200 cards for the soldiers! 8. I then sorted the cards into the different mailing boxes so that each one had a variety of grade levels. 9. I got addresses from a teacher at school whose husband was at war as well as from a neighbor of my Interact Club sponsor. Also, I used the website called, anysoldier.com to find other addresses. This is a great site! 10. I taped the boxes up and sent off the letters. 11. The second year I did this, (my junior year) I decided to turn the project over to my high school Interact Club. I still was the main person in charge of the project, but now I have help from the whole club.
