START (Stop, Think, & Act Responsibly Today) First Aid According the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, a subset of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death in children. Red Cross research also shows that 90% of injuries are predictable and preventable. For an injured person, immediate first aid can make the difference between complete recovery and permanent disability. Our mission is to present this vital first aid information to young people of Greenville, North Carolina. Currently, elementary and middle school students in Pitt County have a limited exposure to first aid through the school system. School nurses who once provided first aid instruction at individual schools have now been assigned to serve multiple schools. As a result, in-school exposure to even basic first aid is nearly nonexistent. With this in mind, we intend to address this unmet health need in our community. Our goal is to teach basic first aid via locally accessible instruction through our “START (Stop, Think, & Act Responsibly Today) First Aid” program. The purpose of “START First Aid” is to present material that includes but is not limited to emergency action steps, rescue breathing, the Heimlich maneuver, how to stop bleeding and treat wounds, as well as self-protective measures, in a fully hands-on, interactive manner. Through educational games, role playing, use of manikins, and tangible first aid tools, we will provide both entertaining and highly instructive practice in first aid.
