The Problem

Children in my community prove that they are capable of being productive, civic-minded individuals in elementary school. As a member of the service organization, Kiwanis International, I have seen groups of Elementary school students pick an issue, set goals, and solve problems on their campus, and in the world around them. However, there is a limited set of resources available for fostering these ideals in early childhood. I want to create a servant-leadership and empathy curriculum supplement that schools and private child care centers can use to encourage the youngest members of our society to become involved and make a difference.

Plan of Action

My plan is to work with local curriculum experts and schools to see what kind of empathy and service leadership programs currently exist, and what they are accomplishing. Then, I want to develop a simplified educational program which will teach young children more about emotions, feelings, need in the community, identifying where help is needed, planning projects, and helping others. Starting locally, in my own schools, I would like to put the curriculum in teachers' hands and see what kind of changes result from the additional support, and the specific community service principles and project ideas gathered from my experiences with Kiwanis.
