The Starting Smart program has one main goal and purpose, to educate today's youth about proper diet and healthy living. Childhood Obesity and Diabetes is a growing issue throughout the United States and it will continue to be a problem is proper intervention is not enacted. Educating the children of today will lead to a healthier generation tomorrow and hopefully continued knowledge of how to live a balanced healthy life.
With the help of physicians, nutritionists, dietitians, and students in the community, grade school children and parents will get educated on balanced meals and portion control. Eating healthy does not mean eating bland tasteless food. Showing people how large "an ounce" can put things in perspective and learn the difference between the requirements of nutrition and the excess food intake in many households in the United States.
The second issue that the Starting Smart program addresses is a proper and healthy lifestyle. With the development of wonderful technology, children's hobbies have drastically changed from playing sports outside, playing in the park, and physical exertion to watching television and playing video games. Kids have a lot of energy and should be outside using it and enjoying the outdoors. With the help of town and city councils, after school programs can be made more affordable and accessible to the community.
This is a big project that requires the help of many people in the community with the possibility of fantastic rewards. Starting Smart can bring a community together and alter the current detrimental way of living our nation's youth currently has. While it may seem like a difficult task, it is very achievable and together we can make a difference.
