The Problem

UGIVE.org is a nonprofit organization that as a whole is trying to create life long givers in the youth of America, a practice of giving back to the community in an efficient way. The Step Up Cincinnati project not only addresses exposing as many area youth to community service as possible, but it also seeks to provide help to non-profits tending to the homeless, hungry, and needy population within the city. At a time when the economy is rough and everyone is holding onto any extra money, volunteering contributes time that equates to money back into society. It also empowers youth to understand the importance of participating in volunteering service in order to better a community that has given them so much. In order for area non-profits & charities to continue, we have to play a role in ensuring their wellbeing, so that they will be around for our children’s children. Cincinnati high schools, not unlike many other cities, are also very divided: between East & West, public & private, and urban & rural. Uniting teenagers at various schools across the city fosters cooperation & new relationships outside their immediate village, town or school.

Plan of Action

The 2009 Summer Internship program took all 30 students and divided us into marketing, recruiting, organizing, and design teams completely responsible for creating an entire event at the end of the summer on September 19th, 2009. As a team, and in individual leadership roles, we researched and reached out to high school clubs, teams, and classes for potential volunteers. We confirmed a location for the event, called and connected with local businesses to request donations to our after party event, and created a logo for the marketing for the Step Up Cincinnati event. We reached out to parents & teachers in order to gather adult volunteers, as well as acted as liaisons between our individual high schools and the project. We enlisted students with flyers, handouts, posters and announcements via emails, phone calls and village boards. This year the Summer Internship team will utilize all of these actions, plus a few new ones in creating a successful, large scale event. Last year, the Step Up Cincinnati event engaged over 450 students from 56 different area high schools.
