"Stevie Rae and Friends" Retirement Home Singing Shows

the problem:

So many people grow old, go into retirement facilities, and live the rest of their lives alone. Some are more fortunate. Whichever, "Stevie Rae and Friends" is a way of giving back to the community and to these people who often are forgotten. "Stevie Rae and Friends" is a traveling show put together by Stevie Rae Stephens semi-annually. Each show is an hour long and consists of about 12 songs based around a theme. We visit about 8 or 9 homes in one weekend after practicing for a month. I've been doing these shows for the last 6 years and I love it!

why it's important:

Doing these shows has given me experience, happiness, and a lot of amazing memories. The best part is coming back. The residents remember you and love to shake your haand and just visit. It's such a great thing to see their tired faces brighten up when a song they know starts. It's the best thing ever and so gratifying to see how much the residents appreciate us.

the plan of action:

I book the shows a few months in advance, come up with a theme and song list, gather some friends (Some having done the shows with me for years and some who are new to the idea), decide on attire, and practice! Practice! Practice! We all get together one weekend and type up the program and get it mass printed to hand out at each show. We also will make little goodie-bags to go with each program. We spend a weekend performing at several homes and shake each resident's hand before we leave. Its very fun.

how you can get involved:

More shows like these should happen! Don't forget about the senior community.

sweet idea guys! I think volenter work is important. Y'all can check my sibs and my project. It is called kids helping kids fix broken hearts. We have raised and presented 20,000$ to a poor med ical clinic in mexico.I love your idea;)

Thanks so much for your kind words. Great job raising money for the clinic in Mexico. Stevie Rae

Yes, our old people need love too. And try taking some time to talk to them, the information and stories they provide can give you insight into the world they grew up in. Good luck!

Thank you for your comment. Actually, one of the things that I do is shake hands with each resident and spend time after the show talking with some of them. I have grown attached to many of them and look forward to seeing their faces each time I do a show. Unfortunately, I have lost some of my favorite residents in the last year. It is difficult to come back a few months later and they are gone. I actually had a really hard time with one the losses. All in all, it is so worth the heartbreak of losing a friend when I feel that I can touch so many lives through my music and a little kindness. The residents really love the shows. Thanks again for your comment. Stevie Rae
