The Problem
We have a public school garden where we educate children on healthy eating habits. Our children are from 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades and participate every week during their recess period to dig,, plant, water, weed, harvest and eat organically grown fruits and vegetables. In addition, we plant native flowers around the school for beautification. We have had this garden club for 3 years and continue to try to increase the participation and the volume and variety of plants. A sever lack of funding has been a major roadblock for us, which foces us to limit the number of children that can participate and the overall size of our gardens. Our future goals are to offer this opportunity to all children enrolled in the school and to grow an abundance of organic fruits and vegetable to donate to local food banks.
Plan of Action
With a financial grant, we can expand both the number children participating as well as build more beds, purchase enough gloves, hand tools, raised beds, and plants.
