The Problem

Every single year millions of sharks die of the terrible business of shark finning. Shark finning is the inhumane practice of slicing off the shark's fins and throwing its still living body back into the sea. The sharks die a slow and painful death. They either starve to death, drown to death, or are eaten by other living creatures in the ocean. The awful business of shark finning is growing still and shark fins are being harvested in larger numbers to feed the still growing demand for shark fin soup. Shark finning is not only brutal, but their relentless slaughter of sharks in the ocean are depleting the species close to extinction. Studies show since the 1970s the populations of several shark species have been depleted by over 95%. Due to the clandestine method of harvesting shark fins, the number of sharks killed in the process are not kept track of. Ecologists can only estimate by the number of fins brought into the industry. Many people do not feel the need to save these enchanting creatures because many people in today's word feel that sharks are cruel dangerous creatures when in reality, they are not. They are intelligent creatures who have never killed a human being. Shark do not in fact eat humans. Many bites recorded are very superficial and were probably only caused by the curiosity of the sharks. Sharks are really wonderful creatures, they are the lions of the sea and deserve to thrive on as they have been since the time of the dinosaurs. The sharks need our help. If sharks continue to disappear at this rapid rate, they will soon vanish from the planet. Sharks help to regulate plankton growth which gives us 80% of the air we breath. Without sharks, plankton eaters will over populate and destroy the plankton taking away a vital source of the earth's oxygen This cause is not about just saving these beautiful creatures, but to also save ourselves.

Plan of Action

We are trying to set up this project to spread awareness of the cruelty going on in our oceans. I feel that if we spread enough word of this we can really make a difference. Volunteers could bring petitions to schools and spread awareness to hundreds of students and their families. The group can also email and write letters to the government to inform their opinion of shark finning and really help put a stop to this cruel hunting that, if not stopped, wipe out some of the most beautiful creatures of the sea. Fundraisers can also be held to raise money to help stop shark finning forever.
