The Problem

The goal of "Into the Streets" is to remove the stigma against community involvement, to educate fellow peers about service, and to encourage life-long involvement in one's community while addressing various community needs. By introducing college students to the growing needs of a large metropolitan area, we are indicating the relative ease of finding service projects one can become involved with and continue that involvement in the future. A variety of community issues are tackled through a partnership with over 15 non-profit agencies that have identified volunteer needs. Long-term goals include increasing the number of agencies served and the breadth of the University’s involvement with the community; primarily by taking this episodic event and repeating it quarterly. This will continue to remove the stigma against community involvement, but also encourage the long-term commitment to bettering our city.

Plan of Action

Our plan of action is to unite two distinct communities: the students and faculty of the University of Cincinnati and the greater city of Cincinnati. To do so, we plan to introduce communal issues and needs that need to be addressed and redressed. The money that we would receive from a "Do Something" Grant would be used to foster ongoing relationships with agencies that currently support our cause and share similar interests. It could also add a sense of sustainability to the project. This sustainability would direct the project from episodic service experiences to a much more continuous service project by increasing its frequency and establishing strong reciprocal partnerships with our gateway agencies. This would help further our outreach in the program, and touch many more student lives and of those within the city.
