The Problem
"Strings Attached project" was created in 2009 and introduces St. Louis youth to music education, music mentoring, guitar studies, music notation reading skills and music history within the context of American Roots Music. It is a project of The Vine of St. Stephen's Church of Ferguson, MO. Strings Attached provides positive after school educational activities for under-served St. Louis youth in challenging neighborhoods. The project addresses social inequalities that prevent many St. Louis youth from participating in school orchestra and band programs because they lack the skills required to pass note-reading auditions and the economic capital for private lessons.
Plan of Action
The Strings Attached project is an acoustic guitar study program where youth are taught note reading skills in individual weekly lessons and small group ensemble. The project serves under served neighborhoods in St. Louis city and St. Louis county. It is currently seeking additional funding for its project At Community Arts and Movement Project (C.A.M.P.) on Cherokee St. in south St. Louis.
Youth ages 5-17 are introduced to various American roots music through song practice and oral history. American roots music is music that developed in the United States and includes styles such as bluegrass, jazz, blues, country/western and traditional folk. An emphasis is placed on song and artists of the St. Louis region including Chuck Berry, Scott Joplin, and John Hartford.
Strings Attached provides loaner guitars to youth who lack instruments to practice with at home. It also awards guitars to youth who attend weekly lessons with consistency, have good practice skills and demonstrate a willingness to give back to the community through performance opportunities provided by the project.
