The Problem
The ten public schools in Portland State's Student Leaders for Service afterschool EDG:E program were chosen for their high percentages of youth of color, English-language learners, and free/reduced lunch recipients. EDG:E, which stands for Educate, Dream, Give: Empower, utilizes a "cascading" mentorship model to address these disadvatanges and provide students with positive, college student role models. However, the program not only brings university students as mentors, but also teaches the high school participants to become mentors for middle and lower class participants.
Our Earth Day of Action project hopes to use the success of this afterschool program and address the growing need for positive, weekend projects that engage the local communities and build better school environments.
Plan of Action
Student Leaders for Service Earth Day of Action intends to extend its afterschool mentorship program, EDG:E, into a community-wide event that teaches the students from disadvantaged public schools, the leadership skills of event planning. Projects that spread awareness about conservation and beautify local school environments, will take place at these ten schools, and rally neighborhood members, parents, and students to learn, work, and volunteer together.
