The Problem

I am trying to improve the health and sanitation infrastructure in developing nations. I began my project in Bangladesh, where I distributed toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, mosquito nets, and backpacks to elementary school children, so that they can live healthier lives. I taught them how to use these supplies, and instructed them to encourage their parents and family to also use the supplies. In rural Bangladesh people do not have access to these daily sanitation supplies because they are too expensive. I brought them enough supplies to last them for six months, and I hope to bring more in the near future. I realize that this is not a permanent solution to the lack of health and sanitation infrastructure in Bangladesh, but it is a start. I hope to become a part of the World Health Organization and work with Non Governmental Organizations and the international community to draw further attention to the rural developing world and their lack of infrastructure.

Plan of Action

I spent a few months fund raising for my project last year, and was able to collect enough money to provide a school of 350 students and their families with enough health and sanitation supplies to last them for six months. I went to the school and taught the children how to use these materials, their value, and their importance. This year, I will have a larger team coming to Bangladesh with me. We will be erecting more latrines, and improving the quality of sanitation in the school. We are creating a model for the rest of the village to follow. This will decrease the amount of fecal matter and waste in the ponds and wells that are used for drinking, bathing, and dish washing water.
