The Problem

"We hear over and over, 'I want to help in Darfur but I just don't know what to do.' The Darfur Stove Project is a very tangible way of making a difference in Darfur. Our stoves save money, the environment and lives. As we develop production facilities in Darfur, the stoves will also restore dignity. Join us in making substantive change." ~from www.darfurstoves.org Welcome to Students For Stoves (SFS), a student-led initiative centered in Upper Arlington, Ohio formed to raise funds for the Darfur Stoves Project. My name is Diana Tsai, and I am currently planning a door-to-door fundraiser in my community on August 15. Darfurian women spend as much as seven hours a day foraging for scarce wood, and while they are out searching, they are vulnerable to dangers such as rape. The men cannot go instead because the Janjaweed kill them outright. Researchers at the University of Berkeley have developed a stove that is 75% more fuel efficient than the ones used in Darfur refugee camps, and need funds to distribute the stoves and create workshops to train Darfurians and integrate the stove production into Darfur. The money we raise will be going directly to the Darfur Stoves Project for the following purposes: * Development of workshops in Darfur where the stoves are built, including the rent, tools and equipment. * Cost of training local Darfurians in the production of the stoves. * Cost of sending highly skilled engineers into the field for workshop setup, training and QC. * Cost of the supplies and inventory to produce the stoves.
