Students United for Mothers in Prison

The Problem

At the date of their imprisonment, 50% of incarcerated women are either pregnant or have given birth in the past year. Pregnant inmates give birth in prison without the support of loved ones. As soon as 24 hours after they give birth, they are separated from their children. Many women have to wait months or even years before they can see their babies again.

Plan of Action

Our project aims to offer continuing support to pregnant and postpartum inmates through classes, health counseling, and doula support during labor. We are currently bringing together nursing students, seminarians, psychology students, and public health students to develop and teach a postpartum health class at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto, GA. This class will provide a safe space for postpartum inmates to learn about their bodies, how to identify and cope with postpartum depression, setting family goals and planning for the future, and to receive health counseling on postpartum issues. The project will be supported by professional doulas, chaplains, and professors at Emory University.
