The Problem
Currently there are little activities for youth to do in the summer time in the Dove Creek, CO community. Therefore, youth in our community get involved in other risky behaviors such as drinking alcohol, etc. We are STUD (Students Taking action against Underage Drinking) and our mission to it provide fun, educational, alcohol and drug free activities for the youth in our community. We provide various programs and activities that increase our youth's protective factors and encourage happy, healthly lifestyles.
Summer activities benefit youth at all levels from elementary to high school. The self-esteem and sense of purpose that kids can get from involvement in summer programs may help raise their aspirations and give them a reason to say “no” to risky behaviors.
Summer activities programs are safe, supervised places for youth to gather. They often offer a variety of positive activities such as recreational activities, life skills, social skills, community service activities, as well as provide youth with caring adult guidance and supervision.
Plan of Action
STUD has an AmeriCorp member who helps coordinate many of our programs. She has collaborated with the Director of the Dove Creek Recreation Department, and numerous volunteers to help make this possible. Also, our AmeriCorp member with STUD will offer scholarship funds to ensure that any youth who wants to attend will be able to. Because we are a small, rural community this program will be open to all youth of any age.
Our Summer Activities Program will take place from June 1, 2011-August 11, 2011 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Dove Creek Recreation Department every Tuesday thru Thursday. Snacks will be provided. We are adding an academic challenge table that kids can win prizes for using their smarts! Activities will kick off on June 1st at 1:00 pm with a welcome pizza party! Activities include arts & crafts, dance, outdoor adventures, cooking, games, field trips, and much more!
All staff time has been volunteered. We hope to get some supplies donated, but still lack some funds to purchase snacks, supplies, and prizes.
