The Problem

Summer time tends to make many of us lazy, mainly because of the extreme heat and lack of "fun" things to do. I've seen many young people [myself included] become sick of summer very quickly and in a way, our minds begin to rot. Unless you're working a lot, or going to summer classes, or doing sports, or finding other creative ways to keep busy, many of us hide in our houses and don't do anything, literally, all summer. School's over, there's really not much else to do besides flop down in front of the tv and lay there for hours...wrong. There's plenty to do- especially plenty of things that we can help others with.

Plan of Action

Our Summer Crochet program will be once a week (probably on Thursdays), held at Bloomfield Children's Library. (We've hosted these activities in the past, so all we needed to do was request our dates on the library calendar with the Librarian, and get approval). The activity lasts for 3 hours and is entirely free and open to everyone. We provide some yummy noms for all participants, as well as all of the crochet hooks and yarn required for the crafts (and friendship bracelet strings, knitting needles, and other craft items). At past events, we've usually on average had 20-25 people attend each craft day, 5-7 H4H members participate, and over 300 bracelets made each time. Our summer goal is to have 100 people from the community, and to create over 1,000 bracelets to donate to Clara Maass Medical Center and the volunteer EMT squad for the ambulances.
