Summer Inclusion Camp Project

the problem:
Four graduate special education majors are planning a summer camp inclusion project for children with autism. We are researching summer camps in the Philadelphia area (PA and NJ) who are open to including children with ASD into their programs. We are building a training module for use for camp counselors and teens interested in volunteering as support assistants to these children with ASD. We are also developing a brochure which identifies inclusive camps for parents of children with autism. We are still in the data collection/development stage of this project, but will have a comprehensive plan of action by 8/2/07.

Last summer I worked as an individual inclusion aide for a camper with autism at a day-camp here in Evanston (IL), he was the only autistic out of about 30 9-11 year olds (neurotypical). I think this program sounds wonderful and that it is a great opportunity! I am pleased to know you are using trained professionals in the camp. Last summer I had some experiences with the regular staff in which they weren't being understanding of the camper I worked with, and would actually make fun of him, so it will be good that everyone will be trained to be understanding.
Great plan!
