This past year I was a senior and as a senior at my school, you have to do a senior project. For my senior project I planned, organized, and ran our local summer reading program. For the past five years I have helped the local librarian with the program but never had the chance to create my own program. For this reason I took it on as my Senior project.
By doing crafts and games with the kids, I encouraged them to read over their summer vacation. We did crafts like pet rocks. After the craft was over they would want to read more on how to do the crafts. With the program being at the library, the kids had full access to all the books and would check them out each week. I also hired a ventriloquist to help encourage the kids to read.
Our library is in a very small town and we do not have a lot of funding, so it was not possible for me to buy big prizes for the person who read the most during the program. Each week I gave the kids a small prize and a book to take home. At the end of the program, we also had a party for the kids. This consisted of games and a cook out.Through this program I tried to show the kids that reading can be fun and that it is a good activity for summer. I also tried to give them ideas of what they could do over the summer instead of hanging out on the streets as they see the older kids doing. Both the kids and I enjoyed the program very much. Through this program I learned patience, time management, and how to work with not only adults but children too. It was a very fun and exciting experience for me.
