The Problem
Support for International Change (SIC) aims to limit the impact of HIV/AIDS on underserved populations in Northern Tanzania. SIC believes that the HIV/AIDS crisis creates both an imperative to act and an opportunity to learn. We envision a world where HIV/AIDS no longer limits length or quality of life or reduces the social or economic development of communities, and where young people learn the skills to address the health crises of future generations.
Plan of Action
SIC is a youth-led organization started in 2003 based on the foundations of serving rural communities and developing future leaders in international development. We directly impact the HIV/AIDS crisis in a number of ways: educational awareness campaigns in villages through schools and in the community, free mobile HIV testing clinics, peer education programs, and assisting HIV positive patients registered with SIC. Volunteers are the energy and driving force of many of these services. Hailing from campus' across America and the UK, SIC's volunteers undergo a pre-field process led by former volunteers before they arrive in-country educating them on topics ranging from cultural sensitivity training to HIV progression to better prepare them for their work in Tanzania. Once their volunteer program is in process, students run awareness campaigns within their host community (schools, clinics, churches, prisons, etc.) with the intent of educating about HIV/AIDS, reducing stigma, and providing free HIV testing clinics. Since 2003, over 40,000 school-children and communities members have attended teachings by SIC volunteers and over 30,000 free HIV tests have been administered. From this, SIC has registered over 600 HIV positive patients and provided them with free transport to hospitals as well as basic supplies such as mosquito nets, soap, and multivitamins. We aim to expand our university involvement to bring about more interested volunteers and reach even more members of the Tanzanian community
