The Problem

Lawate is a small, rural village in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania, East Africa. The community is poverty-stricken, the average household income is less than $200/year USD. They have been hit hard by malaria, AIDS, malnutrition and the various side effects of drought and famine. This has left over 200 orphans in Lawate alone. There is no building or anyone to care for them. The government is not providing for them, and most are not even attending primary school.

Plan of Action

Wings of Refuge wants to build a sustainable farm in Lawate for the orphans. The farm will have crops, vegetables, spices, fruit and goats and chickens. The food will be used to feed the orphans, and the excess will be sold at market. All of the funds raised from the selling of the produce will go right back into the orphanage project. We will also be able to hire some of the older orphaned children to work on the farm. Giving them a fair wage, and vocational training they would not otherwise receive. Instead of handing out fish, we desire to create fishermen.
