The Problem
Through Suzie’s Closet I try to improve the quality of life for people with serious health issues and developmental delays. I have Cerebral Palsy, and I need a power wheelchair to get around. There are many children like myself who need special equipment to move around and communicate. The process for filing insurance for medical equipment takes too long. By the time your equipment arrives it may not fit you, or you may not need it any more. I wanted people to have what they need, when they need it.
How could I make sure other families didn’t have to face the same struggles as mine? I decided to start an equipment loan closet called Suzie’s Closet, so people to donate unused equipment to be shared with others who may need it.
I started out with just the loan closet, but saw that the families we serve had other needs too, and many people in the community wanted to help. I decided to expand the project to see if we could do more. I added wheelchair ramp building projects and then stipends for travel to medical specialists.
Plan of Action
In 2003 I started Suzie’s Closet, a medical equipment loan closet. We have received equipment from hundreds of families willing to share what they no longer needed. The cool thing about us is they can keep the equipment as long as they need it absolutely free of charge.
After starting Suzie’s Closet I came to realize the families we serve had other needs besides medical equipment and supplies. Many had difficulty getting in and out of their houses, or had a hard time paying for out-of-town visits to medical specialists. Since 2003 I have organized 7 groups of volunteers to build wheelchair ramps for people’s homes. I also started a special fund to provide travel stipends.
Through donations of equipment, grants, and individual contributions we have been able to provide services for about 1000 families at no cost to the families.
